Living in the modern world, and somehow still unseen?

You’ve spent your life being watched, scrutinized, and pulled apart by the same world that looks past who you are at the core. It’s exhausting to be hyper-visible and overlooked at the same time, and the loneliness of that contradiction is a lot to hold inside.

At Therapy & Mor, we see all of you. The version that shows up, performs, and provides. And the version that's tired, tender, and ready for somewhere safe to set it all down.

For many Black people, therapy hasn’t felt like an option. Maybe it wasn’t talked about at home. Maybe it was treated as something you don’t need if you’ve got faith, family, or grit. Maybe you’ve sat across from a provider who didn’t get it, and you walked out feeling more unseen than when you came in.

Therapy for African American clients is a space where none of that has to be the case. It’s where you can talk about racial trauma without having to explain why it matters. Where culture is part of the work. Where you don’t have to translate, perform, or protect anyone else from the truth of what you’re carrying.

At Therapy & Mor, this is therapy, and more. Honest conversations, practical tools, and a team built to be intentionally diverse. Our team includes African American mental health professionals who have trained for years to help you move through what’s been weighing you down.

Why Choose
Therapy for African American clients

Being strong isn’t the same as being okay.

What Brings Our Clients In

Therapy for Black adults, teens, and kids in Houston, TX, gives you space to set down what you’ve been holding and figure out what you want to carry forward. At Therapy & Mor, we work with clients in Montrose, Missouri City, and online across Texas who are ready for support that meets them where they are.

Anxiety, panic attacks, and OCD often show up after years of gripping the wheel of your own life too tightly. Therapy for African American clients helps you understand what’s driving the tension and gives you tools to loosen the hold it has on you.

Depression doesn’t always show up as sadness. Sometimes it looks like going through the motions, feeling numb, or wondering if joy is something other people get to have. Therapy for African American clients helps you trace where the heaviness started and find your way back to feeling like yourself.

The cumulative weight of microaggressions, systemic stress, and what you’ve witnessed in your community is heavy, and it’s valid. We name it, we hold space for it, and we work with you on healing without asking you to minimize it or get over it on someone else’s timeline.

Being told you have to be ten times better. Code-switching all day at work. Holding it together so no one calls you angry, lazy, or too much. The exhaustion of all that has a name, and there’s somewhere to put it down.

Family runs wide and deep, and so do the patterns that get passed down. Therapy for African American clients and couples helps you understand what you inherited, what you want to break, and what you want to pass on instead.

Losing people too soon, too often, or too violently can leave you numb or quietly carrying it for years. Therapy gives that grief somewhere to live so it doesn’t have to live on top of you.

Wondering if you’re enough. Asking who you are when you stop performing. Learning to be proud of yourself in a world that hasn’t always celebrated you. Therapy for African American clients is where that work has room to happen.

For some, faith is their foundation. For others, it’s been complicated. If religion is part of your story, your therapist will hold that with respect and integrate it into the work as much or as little as you want.

From childhood pain to adult experiences that left their mark, trauma doesn’t stay in the past. EMDR, TF-CBT, and other evidence-based approaches help you process what happened so it stops shaping what comes next.

Our Therapy Methods & More

No two stories are the same, and your therapy shouldn’t feel like a script. At Therapy & Mor, we tailor care to where you are, what you’re working through, and where you want to go.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps you notice the thoughts and patterns running quietly in the background, the ones shaping how you feel and what you do. It’s structured, practical, and gives you tools you can use long after the session ends.

For trauma that’s been sitting with you for a while, or that you’ve never had room to name, TF-CBT offers a steady, evidence-based way to process what happened without retraumatizing you in the meantime.

DBT is for the moments life feels too big, your emotions feel too loud, and you need concrete strategies to ground yourself. Skills for distress tolerance, communication, and getting through hard days without burning everything down.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing helps the brain finish processing what trauma has left unresolved. For racial trauma, childhood trauma, or experiences that still feel close even years later, EMDR can move what talk therapy alone sometimes can’t.

ACT helps you stop fighting the thoughts and feelings that show up uninvited and start building a life rooted in what matters most to you. It’s a powerful approach for navigating identity, purpose, and the long work of becoming yourself.

When the people closest to you are part of what’s hard, the work happens in the room with them, too. Our team offers couples therapy and family therapy for partners, parents, adult children, and the wider definition of family that holds Black communities together.

Every approach we use is grounded in a culturally responsive lens. That means race, culture, faith, family, and history aren’t extras we add in if you ask. They’re part of the work from the first session, with as much or as little focus as you want.

Questions About Therapy for Black Clients

Book a free 20-minute consultation with one of our therapists. If you’d like to start with an African American therapist, you can book directly from this page. If you fill out a contact form, one of our admin team members will reach out within 24 hours during the week. And yes, humans answer the phone.

Saying things out loud to someone trained to listen, without judgment, and without it being passed around to family, can shift what’s been stuck for years. Therapy doesn’t replace faith, and many of our clients keep their spiritual practice central to their healing. Therapy adds skills, perspective, and tools for what prayer alone hasn’t been able to move. Both can be true at once.

Our whole team understands the impact of culture, identity, and systemic stress, and you should never have to self-edit or code-switch in this room. If you have a consultation with a non-Black therapist and feel they can’t quite meet you where you are, ask for a consultation with one of our Black therapists instead. The most important piece of finding a therapist is finding someone you can be fully open with, and we’ll help you get to that match.

We were built to be intentionally diverse in race, culture, gender, faith, and age, and our team is held to one shared standard: you should feel heard, safe, and respected from the first call to the last session. We accept most insurances, work hard to keep care affordable, and our admin team walks you through every step from intake to wrap-up. We also have Black and African American therapists on our team who are experienced, trained, and who can relate to you.

You don’t owe anyone an explanation. Therapy is confidential, full stop, except where there are safety concerns. If and when you decide to share with family, your therapist can help you find words that fit your relationships and your boundaries. Many of our clients find that being in therapy quietly shifts their family dynamic before they’ve said a word about it.

Yes. Research consistently shows that online therapy produces outcomes comparable to in-person care, and many of our clients find it easier to show up consistently when home, work, and travel aren’t in the way. We offer therapy online across Texas, so we can meet wherever you are in Texas.

Showing up is already a lot, especially when you’ve spent years being told to handle it on your own, push through, or take it to God. Just know that none of that has to be figured out before you walk in. Some people come in and name what’s heaviest in the first ten minutes, others want to feel the room out first, or choose not to focus on race at all. We’ll always follow your lead and take it at a pace that’s comfortable for you.

Yes. Our team supports children ages five and up, including teens navigating identity, self-esteem, body image, bullying, and the pressures of growing up in a world that doesn’t always celebrate them. If you’re looking for support for a child or teen, mention that on your consultation call, and we’ll match you accordingly.

It depends on what’s bringing you in and how often you can come. Some clients feel a shift in just a few Therapy for African American clients sessions. Others benefit from longer-term work, particularly when trauma, grief, or generational patterns are involved. The more openly you engage, the faster the work tends to move, and your therapist will check in with you regularly on your progress.

Always. We believe that a strong connection between a therapist and client is one of the most valuable parts of the work. Tell us, or tell our admin team, and we’ll move you to a better match with no pressure and no hard feelings.
